Supercomputers

Australia's First Supercomputer

In 1986 DSD acquired Australia's first supercomputer, a Cray Research system. It was installed at the Directorate's site in Victoria Barracks, where it provided a high speed processing service for computational intensive applications.

When the machine was decommissioned its mainframe chassis was moved to Canberra for display in DSD's new building.

Better and Faster Machines

Another important machine used by DSD was a Cray Parallel Vector Processor. After it was decommissioned, DSD donated it to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, to form part of their Mathematics and Computing collection.
