Linguist careers
The Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) has an ongoing requirement for linguists to support our signals intelligence work. Your work will directly support Australian Defence Force operations, counter-terrorism efforts and the work of our intelligence assessment and policy customers.
We need linguists who:
- are fluent in Asian, Middle Eastern and North African languages
- can provide interpretation as well as translation of a broad range of foreign language material
- want to work with a committed team to solve difficult problems.
An interest in current affairs is also desirable.
Formal qualifications are not essential but you will need to pass a demanding test involving translating and transcribing foreign language material into English accurately. You will need sound judgement to make decisions about what to translate.
You will enjoy working with different teams on different challenges and be trained to use our specialised systems. You will be asked to translate and interpret a broad range of materials. You will be given opportunities to extend your language skills and may have opportunities to learn other languages.
Linguists may apply directly for positions advertised on the Defence Intelligence and Security Group Careers website or submit an expression of interest and résumé for possible future vacancies. Please include your employment history, nationality and explain the source of your language skills (eg, university, ADF training, native speaker) and write to:

Submitting an expression of interest does not constitute an application. Expressions of interest will be used to identify people who may meet DSD’s requirements, who will then be invited to participate in a formal recruitment round.
